Cuttlefish and Marine Census…

The other night when my husband starting saying cuddle fish to me, I was puzzled. I was not sure that I liked being called “fish”, but if he wanted to cuddle, I thought “Well… Ok… Why not”. Then I thought he was calling me “cuddle fish”, and I thought “I know that I don’t like that… But I do like cuddling…”.

Then I realized that he was watching TV about marine life and he was talking about a “Cuttlefish” not me and cuddling. A “Cuttlefish” is a marine animal that is like a squid and is often called the chameleon of the ocean because it can change color at will. It can change color and texture of its skin for camouflage and communication.

My husband and I used to love watching Jacques Cousteau and the Calypso on their sea explorations. W still love to watch the similar programs on PBS, the Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Channel, the Science Channel, and others. I never understood what all that discovered information was used for – It always seemed a little bit of a waste.

Now researchers in more than 80 nations have undertaken a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans. The world’s first comprehensive Census of Marine Life will be released in 2010.
