The Bennett and Related Facts...
The Bennett was built in the year 1881.
The crown 'jewel' of the Bennett is the
"Rose Window," a stained-glass circular window which at night
is backlit. The stained-glass effect was achieved by a process
which is believed similar to the method invented by Louis C. Tiffany
whereby edges of pieces of glass are wrapped in copper foil and then
soldered with tin. The interior windows of
the Bennett were also crafted by this same glass
technique.
The Bennett's current
structure houses 22 windows both on the interior and exterior walls.
The windows are leaded stained
hand-blown glass, with a bulls-eye.
The Bennett once housed
more than 38,000 books.
In 1980 The Bennett
was finally 'retired' as the town library when the then new town library
located further south on Concord Road was built. The contents of the Bennett
were then transported to the new library. (For historical purposes, the
library related to here has since been converted to Billerica's new Town Senior Center.)
In 2003,
the estate of Robert Prest generously donated $5000 to The Bennett.
Unfortunately, all efforts to find any connection between Robert Prest and
The Bennett returned fruitless. The Membership continues to
seek any information on Mr. Prest in hopes to properly record his
generosity.
In 2005, the Bennett's chimney
was renovated and a rear deck and handicapped accessible ramp created.
In 2007, the walkway was replaced, and exterior lighting and a handrail was added.
Julius Sumner Miller (actor, physics
professor)... Born in Billerica, May 17, 1909... According to Julius
Sumner Miller, while living in Billerica, Mass., he had "read the town
library dry" by the age of 16. He studied under Albert Einstein and
was his lifelong friend.
Rick McIntyre (writer, wildlife photographer, park ranger)... Grew up
in Billerica from birth to age 10 and resided on Concord Road.
